Change of Android Market to Google Play

Google has rebranded its applications store, Android Market, as Google Play. This is not just a mere name change because Google now believes that Android Market is a digital entertainment destination. This means the Market will not just be a place for accessing applications but is now meant for games, movies, songs and books as well. A complete cloud-based service, Google Play will store all the music, movies and apps online.

The fresh new interface of Google Play will be accessible on all Android smartphones, Android tablets and the desktop browser. As the Android Market, Google Music and the Google eBookstore will become part of Google Play, users will have to upgrade the Android Market app to the Google Play Store app in the coming days.

Our Take: As in most of the countries, the Google Play will just be a new name with a new interface for Android Market without access to the additional content; initially it will just confuse the users. Just see what Google Blog itself says: "In the US, music, movies, books and Android apps are available in Google Play. In Canada and the UK, we'll offer movies, books and Android apps; in Australia, books and apps; and in Japan, movies and apps. Everywhere else, Google Play will be the new home for Android apps. Our long-term goal is to roll out as many different types of content as possible to people around the world, and we'll keep adding new content to keep it fresh."
